Now more than ever the public is being aquainted with the topic of self mutilation. It is a practice of many names: self
injury, self abuse, self harm, and self mutilation, to name a few. In the most general terms, self mutilation is the
attempt to alter a mood or state of mind by inflicting physical harm to one's body.
Self Injurious Behaviors Include:
- Cutting
- Carving
- Scratching
- Branding
- Burning
- Pulling Hair
Many people find the thought of inflicting pain upon themselves frightening, and often sickening. Widely misunderstood,
people who self injure receive a general lack of support from the public. Too frequently are they dismissed as merely attention
seeking or suicidal. It is imperative, however, that people who harm themselves be understood. Self mutilation is a problem,
an addiction, in need of treatment.
